i dont think its about using their money to sign international stars cause that just gives the one individual player more attention. one great player wont make up for a mediocre team and his single talent wont necessarily help the others improve.
i think mls needs some serious training and if theyre going to spend money, they need new coaches or trainers.
the only way (in my opinion) that the mls will gain popularity is by proving to the world that they are as competative as european clubs or south american clubs. they need to show that they can rival these already famous clubs and buying players wont do that. they only way to do so is to focus and improve. the players clearly have talent....they just dont seem to have the heart and that european and south american clubs have because they are stuck in this mindset that they will never be the best.

It's historically accurate to call it soccer, just type the word "soccer" in any online encyclopedia and you will see that America did not give it that name. Didn't need to, we already had football.
MLS is doing just fine. It needs to continue going as it does because NASL tried to be competitive from the start and went bankrupt. In time, more teams will have their individual owners like New York does. It has been reported in Philadelphia that Lamar Hunt is trying to sell the Kansas City club and there is speculation that MLS would not be against the idea of it relocating to this area.
More soccer-specific stadiums are being constructed and players continue to develop. We aren't going to be a world power any time soon despite the MLS victory over Chelsea. If it means great success in the future steady development and growth is okay with me.

Look, the NASL was a kick. I went to over 100 Whitecaps home and road games. I loved the NASL because it had cool players, unis and team nicknames, great fun playoff format, goals galore, etc.
The MLS need to sign stars...even over-the-hill Pele-like stars. Just this time do it with common sense and don't expand the league in attempts to parallel the NFL like that idiot Woosnam did and forget indoor soccer!
I have been to all of one MLS game (in Columbus vs. NY featuring a bunch of non-Chinaglias) and it sucked--no atmosphere, lack of any action and snooze inducing. So sign Beckham, Ronaldo, whomever....get a buzz going because American players are not going to do that at all.
P.S. And tell all Brit eejits that's it's also soccer in Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, Japan and South Korea among othe nations. So get over yourself, I don;t wang on your lot for calling hockey "ice hockey" or football "American" football and having no clue that Canadian and Aussie Rules football as well as gaelic football and rugby football exists. It's because thsoe games are played ON foot...geez, how stupid can you be Land of Eng people?

I saw the MLS vs Chelsea match. I couldn't believe how good of a game it was. I thought it was going to be a joke like the rest of the all-star games in the past. It was very enjoyable to watch.
As to your question, MLS is doing just fine. They are expanding to areas where the sport is popular and can bring more money. To all those of you who say we should bring washed up European players, you are wrong. We do not need them. What we need is to develope the talent here in the US and send them over to Europe. As we did with Convey, Beasley, Howard, and the other players we have in Europe. I do think that the MLS needs to bring more European teams for friendly matches.
P.S. D.C United rules!

The MLS just had their all star team beat the defending champions of the EPL Chelsea. I think if our clubs continue to grow, stay on tv, and build on the popularity of the world cup were have an even more vibrant sport.
And get Bruce Arena into the front office of MLS, he knows the game very well.

Signing foreign stars is what killed the NASL. You had all these foreigners playing while the American players sat on the bench. It basically showed the American public that soccer isn't an American sport.
The MLS needs to get involved with soccer at the grassroots level. Today's kids are tomorrow's ticket buying fans.
