Pink Floyd is a band that formed in the 1960's. Their first top selling single is titled "Arnold Lane", which was written by Syd Barret who recently passed away at the age of 60. Syd was a founding member of the band who also included Roger Waters and David Gilmore who succeded Barret as the lead vocalist and primary creative force.
Barret, and later to a lesser extent, Waters both suffered mental breakdowns that lead to their departure from the band. Waters was somewhat successful in a solo career afterwards.
Pink Floyd created the longest running top selling album of all time "The Darkside of the Moon". It was on Billboards top 100 for over a decade, I believe. I myself have purchased three copies of it, first on vinyl, then cassette, and finally CD which I still listen to from time to time. The cassette wore out. I still have the vinyl, but my turntable no longer works!
Pink Floyd came to wide popular recognition in 1979 (I think) with the release of the album "The Wall". There was a hit single "Another Brick in the Wall" which is fairly well known.
Pink Floyd's albums usually have a unifying theme. "The Wall" was Roger Waters' interpretation of his own mental illness (which he largely blames on his mother, it appears). "Wish You Were Here" is the remaining band members lament at the departure of Barret (written mostly by Waters and Gilmoure, as I recall). "The Final Cut" is about stress induced by the Cold War and the Falklands War in the early 80's. Some of the later works are less obvious (with the departure of Waters).
If you are interested, the obligatory Pink Floyd collection includes the albums I mentioned (the rest of The Wall is actually much better than 'Brick) as well as Meddle (which has "St. Tropez" and "Seamus") Animals ("Dogs" and "Pigs on the Wing") and The Division Bell (which is mostly the poems of David Gilmour).
There are some other tracks that are obsure but really neat. The one that comes to mind is "Several Small Furry Creatures Huddled Together in a Cave Grooming with a Pick" (I may not have that quite right - it is on the album Umonga, which I may also not have quite right... its 60's vintage and been a long, LONG time since I've listened to it. Mine is vinyl). I'm especially fond of "Not Now, John" on "The Final Cut" (check out the lyrics).
Finally, Pink Floyd is the name of a Blues artist from the 40's.
Oh, I almost forgot. If you explore Pink Floyd and find it interesting, you might check out "The Alan Parsons Project". It is a band the producer (Alan Parsons) of Pink Floyd assembled. It is kind of like Pink Floyd Light. They're known for "I Wouldn't Want to be Like You".

Pink Floyd was a huge english progressive rock band.
They have an extensive number of original songs to their credit and are noted for their philosophical compositions and musical experimentations. Their album covers are also remarkable for the art depicted on them. Their live shows were some of the most complex and spectacular deployments in rock history.
The members of Pink Floyd are no longer together (their founding member Syd Barrett died on July 7 of this year, but he had long been replaced as lead singer by David Gilmour) and the last performance of the group was in July 2005 at Live 8. Several of the members now have solo careers, David Gilmour released an album earlier this year for example.
The band has a very long history which began in the 1960s. They had different members over the years. They released 14 studio albums over the years, first one in 1967 and the last in 1994, and some of their best known work can be found on the albums Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall. They have influenced a large number of more contemporary rock and heavy metal bands, such as Metallica.

The best band ever, arguably, they had the greatest guitarist, Dave Gilmoor and one of the great lyric writers Roger Waters along with the best guitar solo in history in Comfortably Numb

To any too younger the album "The Wall" used to be a well location to begin when you've not ever listened to Pink Floyd.. Listen to the phrases of "Another Brick In the Wall" the angst of wasting his father who used to be within the army is his affliction for all to listen to.
