If I were younger, Holden Cauffield, I just think he needs someone to love him and try to understand him.

Oh! Oh!
Colonel Christopher Brandon from "Sense and Sensibility" (Jane Austen). I could go for Edward Ferrars too... but Colonel Brandon is awesome and is my first choice.
I pick him because he is my kind of guy. He is very loyal, honest and courageous. He is also stable and responsible... which is a big 'must have' for me. When you get to be my age, you want a man you know will stick it out with you... not some money hunting jerk like John Willoughby. Colonel Brandon is patient, and kind, and soft spoken. He is the type of man who is content to sit next to you by the fire and quietly read... which is something I love to do. Also, think of all the traveling he did in when he was in the military. I bet he would have some great stories to tell.
Alan Rickman played the perfect Colonel Brandon in the 1995 movie version of Sense and Sensibility (imho). I love Alan Rickman! So that made me love the character all the more!

Lydia Gwilt or Ozias Midwinter from Wilkie Collins's Armadale.
1. Stunning beauty, experienced, and very, very intelligent.
2. If I was a director I would cast Adrian Brody for the role. Sensitive, intelligent, talented, and unearthly in a way.

Mr. Darcy... but I don't really think that he would be so vulgar as to call it a love affair. If you mean "be married to" Mr. Darcy without a doubt! He is so mysterious and sweet! I would SO enjoy to get to know him and his strange sense of humor. Plus he is handsome! I would never actually participate in a love affair, but he is so quiet, I would have to talk (which I do!) and I think I am quite like Lizzy Bennet in humor and wit.... so we would get along!

Lucas Davenport from John Sandford's Prey series. He's a tough, smart cop with a nice cabin on the lake. He's also mega-rich. I'd tire of him, but this is just and affair, right? ;)

Although this really wouldn't be possible, Jake from "The Sun Also Rises" by Hemingway. (If you have read this book, you understand why I say this wouldn't be possible.)
Second runner up would definitely have to be Mr. Darcy though.
Or really any of those romantic heroes from books set in the 17-1800s England.

Wow! Such possibilities! Heathcliff, I suppose. Those wild passionate, dangerous types are so compelling. But then again, there's Rhett Butler. Equally tempting but not quite so 'scary'....

I feel like such a cliche, because GWTW characteres have already taken... but I'm a sucker for Rhett Butler as well...
