If you want the cleanest clothes, use hot water, but I only recommend it for whites. Hot water allows detergent to penetrate tough stains. For all other clothes, use almost cold. What I mean by that is the water temperature must be at least 72 degrees. Most detergents become most active at that temperature so that it can penetrate the dirt and lift it from the fabric. Adjust your water inlet valves to deliver warm water temps at 72 degrees or more. Cold water should only be used on delicate fabrics and you need a detergent specifically for cold water.

Depends on what im washing. If im washing whites or colored I wash them in hot water, but if im washing dark clothes like my jeans and things then I use cold water. I try to read the "how to wash" tag on all my clothers so they wont get messed up or anything.

Hot for whites, warm for everything else. If I didn't live in Phoenix (where the water doesn't come out cold in the summer), I'd be using cold to wash my darks.

Colors = cold.. the cold keeps colors bright.
Whites = hot... the hot water gets out more soil & stains.
You should definetly stick to this rule, it helps your
clothes stay in good shape. For medium toned clothing,
especially sheets, cottons, towels, socks, et cetera, I
usually use tepid or cool/warm water.

I use warm/cold rinse for sheets, towels, and underwear. Everything else (permanent press) gets a cold wash. Hot water it too harsh on most fabrics.

I wash everything in cold except whites (bleach works better in hot water) and towels/sheets (which need hot water to get really clean).
