Yes, it was right for the referee to give Zidane a red card. But, they should have also given Materazzi a red card as well.

Well,it is wrong for him to do such thing. But not to be forgotten,if Materazzi didn't insult him,why would he become mad? So,it would be fair for Zidane to receive a red card, but Materazzi must be given one too. That's what you call fair!! Besides,it is a common knowledge that Zidane all this time has been such an outstanding player as well as being calm and patient, true fans of him know that he wouldn't do such thing unless there is something that really hurts his heart and in this case,it is Materazzi's faulty mouth and stupid words that have hurt our legend of football's heart!!! Besides, remember that history has shown to us what a bad player Materazzi is.Remember the game between Messina and Inter Milan? One of Messina's player,Marc Zoro was insulted by the fans of Inter because of his colour of complexion, and then every players that were on the field went to Zoro and tried to calm him down.Zoro cried at that time and even Adriano who played for Inter went to Zoro and asked the fans to stop that out,but there was one player who didn't support Zoro, and guess what,it was Materazzi!!! How could he say that Zoro's cry was just to get some attention??!! Hmm..so I guess in the end,I think I would say that Zidane shouldn't be given the red card, but Materazzi deserves it very very very well!!!!! Get lost Materazzi!!!

Come on!U werent there & dont know exactly what happend!!!
So, u dont know about the cheaters that were supporting the referee all the time!! Tell me if the referee was good & he could control the game perfectly, could u even imagine that stand & tell every insults u like to a player?!! Could u imagine u have been insulted with really hard words when u r really tired & exhausted during a hard match & after playing for 110 min! And suddenly a rude person come & insult ur mom & ur sister! Why?!! What is ur fault?! Being beloved & popular?! Being in every one heart?!! What a jealous person!!!
Vive ZiZou!

I think the red card was a fair punishment, it doesn't matter if you are a great player or not. I'm a huge fan of Zidane, but no one is above the law, what he did was bad and the card was appropriate.

Technically no... there's no such thing as video evidence in soccer which was how the ref was informed. Any assault on a player is an immediate red card offence IF THE REF SEES IT!!

Well, he DID assault another player.
Would have been better if he'd just walked away, or given him a trip during play. But fisticuffs during stoppage should be an automatic red card.

It was definitely fair. Trash talk happens all the time in sports. You have to keep your cool.
