Let's start from the beginning. I'll go ever a few things I'm sure you tried already but I'm doing this to help not only you. If you get no sound make sure these speakers work, plug them into your stereo of another computer you know can play sounds. if the speakers are ok, check the sound card. open the box and make sure(that the computer is off and cold [wait 30 sec before you touch anything] then ground yourself with a grounding wristband) that the sound card inserted properly and snugly into the slot. If its an onboard sound card then wkip that. After the card is inserted properly make sure the drivers are recognized and operating. Go to the Device Manager accesable in the control panel or in Computer Management (right click on My Computer and select manage) If they are not (a yellow exclamation point shows next to the sound device or there is a "unknown device" listed in the control panel, try updating the drivers right click the device and select "update drivers" and follow the automatic recomendations. If that still doesn't work, comletely uninstall the device, turn off the computer, unplug the card and restart the computer, remove the drivers, restart the computer, install the drivers you should have gotten from a disk, or go to the manufacturers website and get the drivers. If you go to the website for the drivers double and triple check that you got the newest drivers for the card you are useing and no other device. Then turn off the computer, plug in the card and start it up. It is very important on all Windows systems, and this applies to Windows 3.1, win 98, winME, winNT, win2000, winXP AND all windows servers, that the drivers for your new device is installed BEFORE the hardware is inserted. This way Windows already knows what to do with the new device.
If you saw a bear in the woods for the first time, what do you do? Your instinct says its an animal thats bigger than me get away from it as fast as possible. If you read up on bears before you ventured into bear territory, you know running away only intruiges them. Windows needs to know ahead of time what to do with new stuff. A computer cannot reason and learn, It does exactly what it's told.

Make sure that the speakers are plugged into the right jack on the back of the computer. On most computers it will be a light green, on older computers it may be black.

Make sure that if they are powered speakers you have the volume turned up on the speakers. Try a different pair of speakers, or even a pair of headphones.

Go to the device manager (Control Panel->System->Hardware Tab->Device Manager button), and see if any devices have a yellow question mark or a red x. If so, enable or download drivers for these devices.

Make sure the system volume is turned up. When you double click the volume icon next to the clock, a mixer will open. Make sure that the master volume and the wave volume are turned up.

Try running a sound test, it sould tell you where the problem is after running it. I'm not sure how to run the test though... that was kind of useless huh?
