Bastard is not gender specific, but matrimonial specific. Any child of unwed parents is a bastard. Another term (less frequently used) is by-blow, which is also non gender specific.

"Bastard" is not a gender specific term. To wit: Two Nuns were sitting in a restaurant booth next to two people who were using a lot of foul language. One says to the other, "I was 2 months old before my parents were married."....to which the other responded: "I was 2 YEARs old when my parent got married." After a while one of the Nuns asked them: "Would one of you bastards please pass the salt."

It is NOT gender specific, and it does NOT normally apply to boys!!
Bastard as an insult just means something along the lines of 'git', 'scum-bag', or simply 'you NASTY person!!' Formerly it was used as an insult with implications of 'your parents aren't married!' but these days that's redundant - because MOST people's parents aren't married...!
No-one calls illegitimate children 'bastards' anymore, because 'respectable' people are dropping illegitimate kids like there's no tomorrow! When it was usually poor people doing it, it was okay to use it as an insult - but now that everybody does it, it's just not worth the effort..!
However, the word 'bastard' still means 'illegitimate' - 'born when the parents weren't married' - and it CAN be used for boys OR girls, but it's best not to really...
