I have been selling on eBay for a few months (books), but I feel like the category is so flooded, no one can see my really good stuff. i compare it to other stuff that is flying out the door and I wonder if there is something else I can do without raising my overhead a lot. Answers, ideas? I'd love to spread the word here, but that's against the rules.

selling on ebay generally sucks. i've done it before and people don't want to pay for stuff. i think only actual retailers who already sell their products in stores do well on ebay.

i think the fees ebay asks are too high as well.

try selling your books at certain flea markets that are frequented by older, more sophisticated people who read.

In any business, you have to find your target market and it is always best if you can define a niche to specialize in. The niche either has to be large or if it is small, your profit margin needs to be larger. For example, in books, the are hundreds of different niches. You could go into used "children's books" which is a large market or you could specialize in "first editions" books which is generally a smaller niche but has the bigger returns. You might sell a larger number of children's books at a smaller profit or a smaller number of first editions at a bigger profit. Another example, if you want your sales to be $1M you could either sell 1000 items that cost $1000 or you could sell 100,000 items that sell for $10. You get the picture.

Once you decide on your niche, to compete on ebay, you might want to consider "free shipping" options, a bonus book or two or some other incentive to buy that same book from you as opposed to another seller. Maybe you could offer trade ins as well. For example, take the book back within 30 days when they buy another one. Then recoup your money when you sell the book again. Start an ebay buyer's club and start sending out emails. Once they buy from you on ebay make sure you keep their email address and back end sell them.

Think outside and inside the box! Experiment to see what works and discontinue what doesn't.

make sure your title is good,
always use the gallery even though it may seem like a waste of money,
try to list your item so that it ends when people are most likely to be watching.
