You need to gain some skill as an actor. Start with local theatre productions, take classes in acting, and/or pursue an acting major in college. Pick a college with a good reputation in the theatre, a lot of them will have professional actors on the staff. This is important because it will help you get some contacts, and in the acting business, contacts are your life blood.
I would also recommend that you start with a smaller professional acting company in the middle of the country. Look to places like Minneapolis, Chicago, Atlanta, St. Louis. Get a track record established there and then look at moving on to Hollywood or New York.
The most important thing, and I cannot stress this strongly enough, is to have perserverance. It is possible that you might get lucky and "get discovered" on your first outing. It is far more likely that you will spend several years laboring in obscurity before you "get discovered."
If acting is what you want to do, then acting is what you need to pursue. Be prepared to spend a lot of time working low end jobs while you prepare. It can be done, but you have to keep at it.

Yes... lots of people know how to get into the acting business.
You know what? This Yahoo answeres thing has become really old, really fast... always the same damned question... always the same answers.... and instead of looking at the answers to the questions already asked, people ask the same damned question... over and over again....
I've answered that question enough times that I'm sick and tired of answering it.
I'll give you this much... at least you didn't say you want to be a damned disney actor.... disney.... disney.... disney.... that's all some people can ask about.... like there are two different types of actors.... "every day actors", and "disney" actors...
Thanks for not asking "How do I become a disney actor?"

Many people think they can just be discovered by a talent agent by walking down the street. That is simply untrue. In reality, people work for years building up their careers before they can have their agent work for them.
What you need to do is stay in school. Get as much experience as possible with school/community theater. To get an agent you need to have professional experience. Headshots, resumes, demo reels. Most agents (good agents) prefer that you already be in the actors unions. Then audition like crazy. You should already be auditioning like crazy. For a GOOD actor, 1 out of 10 auditions they attend they get call back for.
Good Luck.

i'm also trying to become an actress...try to find a community theatre near you and audition...if at first you don't excede try and try again...also a really good book you should read is "Breaking into Acting for Dummies" its really good and i learned alot, it tells you how to market yourself....also going to watch plays really helps you to know how it acting works....if there is a community theatre around you and you don't get a part or you don't want to jump into things too quickly you can ask to be an usher (to help people find their seats) and usually the people who run the theatre will let you watch the play for free and maybe come early so you can watch the performers warm up....
....my suggestion get as much exposer as possible and let people know that your intrested...you never know if your neighbors, step-brother's cousin could get you in the business...

Many people start with community theatre groups. Check and see if there are any in your area. (Things like Fringes and local theatre festivals are great for networking.)
If you are really serious and have the money, check with your local college and/or university. Many of them have Bachelor of Fine Arts programmes that really help -- if you are willing to spend the money and dedicate the extra time, of course.
