Lying at the junction of the small and large intestine it is the tip of cecum, which was supposed to be filled with bacteria that produce cellulase to digest cellulose, which it does in animals like Rabbit.In man, the cecum is telescoped with the intestine, leaving the tip, the appendix, as functionless.

I was told when my appendix was removed, don't get snake bit as I no longer had an appendix, it has something to do with protecting the body against toxins.

appendix has been thought to be a vestige.. but we need to consider the pineal gland which was also thought to be a vestige b4... but was later discovered to be secreting melanin...
4 now appendix is said to contain cells for the immune system..
it also plays a vital role in fetus and young adults 4 d' endocrine develops there... it has lymphoid tissue which is primarily for d' immune functions...it also plays a vital role in reconstructive surgery...

No purpose anymore, it is a vestigial structure. I think it was part of the cecum in our past, to aid in the digestion of plant material. I could be wrong though.

It is a lump of lymphatic tissue loaded with white blood cells. It most likely serves to fight off infections in the cecum. However, it isn't so crucial that you can't survive just fine without one.
