if it doesnt knock or ping on regular i wouldnt worry about it ... if u detect any knock at all while accelerating i would use a higher grade though ... even going half regular/half premium usually will be good enough. users manuals almost always recommend premium because of liability reasons. on a hot day if ur driving in hilly country and you pound the rods out of ur motor by knocking it they dont want to be accused.

Unless the vehicle has been wrecked, the fuel door Will tell you what Octane Rating to use.
Most likely it Will want the 87. The PCM (Vehicle's Computer) controls the ignition and fuel. It was designed to use what is listed on the fuel door or in the Owner's Manual.
Using anything higher is a waste of your money. There is no more energy stored in higher octane fuel. It is only a determination of how much anti-knock compound is contained in the fuel. All chemistry.
In the OLD DAYS, we used to advance the timing for more "Seat of your pants" acceleration, and to reduce the knock or "ping" we would pay more for the premium.
The only vehicles that need this premium fuel today are those performance vehicles (i.e. Porsche, Cadillac Etc.) that call for it.
