See the original movie too, not just the new ones. Read the book, it's pretty good, "The Amityville Horror" by Jay Anson. The movie is based on a true story yes, though there are many skeptics out there. I guess it truly depends on what you believe in. I believe it happened and is NOT a hoax, but that's just me. I find that if you believe in the paranormal and horror stories like this one, it makes life so much more interesting and fun.
It's not the scariest though, just know that.
Though check out the background information. Meaning John Ketcham (not sure if it's spelled right), and check out Ronnie DeFeo. Great reading it is. I would give you a great link, but I lost it...sorry.
Yeah, just do a google search on a few names! I love it!!!

Sure is... But there are different versions to the story. The actual house is still standing. You can make-up your own mind about what is true or not. That is if you have guts to go in and wait around until 3:15am... If you want I'll join you.

Yes, it was based on the real life story of this Italian American family who was all gunned down in the house. I think the name of the people were the DeMarcos or something.
In a documentary, they actually said that it was not the father who killed them, it was actually the eldest son who was at odds with the dad. That he was a brute and use to beat the sh!t out of him and his mother. So sick of this and the fact that his mother wouldnot do anything, that one night he and his sister (the eldest of the girls) went and killed the family. He just wanted to kill his mom and dad; she had other plans and she actually killed her younger brother and sister. He was so mad that he turned around and killed her. He just wanted his mom and dad gone, not his siblings.
I hope this help you out with the history of that story and the house that people are afraid of.
