Would facing the threat of total annilation by the hand of evil aliens, unite all the people of the earth to fight our common enemy? Is so, what would happen to our alliances after we have conquered the evil aliens? Would we be able to maintain our alliances indefinitely or would they collapse relatively soon or would they just begin to disintegrate slowly?

Nope, there would still be people willing to sell out thier fellow humans for a piece of bubble gum and illicit sex.

I think we'd still be split up. There'd be a group of people who want to nuke the aliens and a group who want peace talks and so on.

If we did manage to all come together, I think our alliances would collapse. How fast or how slow would depend on a few things, like who's threathening to blow up which country, or how groups of people view certain things like marijuana toleration or abortion.

I think it would collapse relatively soon after the initial alliance of everyone was formed though. I don't think uniting for one common purpose would keep the majority of the planet happy and together for very long. Someone would open their mouth about something and ruin it for the rest of us.

The Libs would act just like the French and surrender before the first shot was fired in anger. The right would fight to the last man or woman and the libertarians would fight but have an eye to privatize everything.

No, not at all. There would be those people who would immediately sell you for some form of special favors, and then there would be those who would seem to unite, only to kill his original enemies as soon as he could. Let's face it, alien invaders could take over earth very easily.

I think groups would suck up to the aliens to get them to side with them against their enemies first. If that didn't work then they would go with the scenario you described but I feel it likely things would be back to business as usual pretty soon after wards.

I believe that all the nations of the world would display a unity of purpose in meeting such a threat, all but the French, who would be their usual obstinate selves.

I bet some of them would try to join forces with the aliens. Jihadists come to mind...

Oh my God, I have said this so many times when someone would ask me if there ever could be world peace. I always answer only if we found life outside our planet...and they were hostile.
