Personally...I have driven into Vegas from LA (and flown in from Phoenix) and it is COMPLETELY empty and just desert as far as the eye can see and you KNOW when you are near Vegas because it is a HUGE "strip" of land in the isolated desert that is colorful, lively and surreal to see from afar.
Wikipedia has a different explanation...but that would be mine! : )

Guy MacAfee owned some early Vegas properties. Was a cop in LA & called Las Vegas Blvd the Strip as reminded him of the Sunset Strip. Is only actually "The Strip " outside Las vegas ie past Sahara ave. The Strip ain't in the city of Las Vegas at all.

When Las Vegas was first built, you could go up in the hills and look down at a strip of lights in the desert. The name stuck.
