there is a hole in the bottom and a rubber disk that goes in it. I got them as a gift and if i don't figure it out I won't use them.

Sounds like the Platex Vent-Aire bottles.
The rubber disk will snap into the bottom piece and that will get screwed onto the bottom of the bottle.

you dont have to do anything special. just put the disk in the bottom cap and screw on to the bottle.
