When I was little, I used to rent a movie from the library. It was a cartoon version of Swan Lake. I believe it was made in the mid-80s. I'm pretty sure that it was a Japanese-made film. I do remember that they spelled Tchaikovsky incorrectly. I believe the spelling was Chaikovski. Does anyone know where I can find this movie?

Not a complete answer, but Miyazaki's art director made animes of a bunch of classic novels for Italian TV some 15 years ago.

Maybe that'll help you find it in a google search. Good luck.

Have you tried amazon.com or play.com they are both pretty good for this thing. www.imdb.com is useful for getting more information on films.
