I live in southern Arkansas and the pear cacti on our place is flourishing. We found a patch of pear cactus alive and well, growing wild, in Wisconsin. I think you can safely leave it outside. One thing about taking cacti inside. Don't put them in the windows. It's natural to want to do that thinking that they need the light. But the build up of ultra red or ultra violet light kills them. Don't remember which, but one of them does the cactus in.

I live in mid Oregon.I have raised many cactus. I always bring them in in the winter. I don't put them in a window. I water them very little only when the ground feels really dry and only a little. I too bought some cactus last spring. Three of different types. Two flourished and grew one died. Later the other one died and one has done well. I think it is how long they have been transported.

I think it would be better off outside until it gets very cold--for southern Missouri. Then put it in a sunny window and water it no more than once a week. It just might bloom. Cacti bloom in the desert when it cools down and there is some rain.
