1995 Subaru Impreza. The power steering just stopped, it became very difficult to turn the steering wheel. We added power steering fluid, but it still doesn't work. (The power steering system was flushed out about 4 years ago, but we haven't put many miles on it since then.) We will be seeing a mechanic soon, but does any one have any experience with this, what kind of repair we should expect?

For starters see if the belt is still on the pully . Then take the cap off of the power steering and see if you see fluid circulating in the resivor . Could be the pump or the racking pinion .Or the fluid could be running out as fast as you put it in .

It could be that your car has a separate power steering belt (as opposed to having the serpentine belt drive it) and the belt broke or fell off. Look under the hood and find the power steering pump. If there is no belt on the pully, chances are that is the problem. The belt should be around $5 at the auto parts store. If it has a serpentine belt, it could be that there is a ruptured hose or the pump just went bad.

Chances are the power steering pump is going out. How much fluid did you add? If it was a lot, you've got a leak somewhere...

Power steering pump probably went out. Expect a couple hundred dollars to fix it. If you need to wait a little while just don't drive it any more than you have to.

you are more than likely going to need a power steering pump replaced. i've had sevral dealing with loss of steering. if the system is full of fluid and not leaking its the pump.
