Well I am the exact same mix, and I personally feel more caucasian because my caucasian mother raised me in a small white mennonite farm community in Kansas, I actually don't think that I could feel less black, but its not because I'm ashamed of it! Your friend probably has her own reasons.

How about the human race? She should make the best of both worlds, when in Rome....
I like to go to sweats and pow wows and noone regards me as Native American even though Im over a quarter. I look white so people discriminate. When others do not honor us honoring our ancestors then I think its their problem.
BTW,
She should be proud of her ancestry. Black Americans have overcome much and have come far, so have Native Americans, Irish Americans, English Americans, Mexican Americans, etc. They have all toiled and suffered and survived so we can be where and who we are today. Our country is stronger and more complete with each group. We continue to strive to make things better for all, that includes stop stereotyping and discriminating against each other, this is a melting pot.

I'd be a member of the human race (as are we all).
I would make no effort to hide my mixed race background...just as Tiger Woods publicly honors his Black / Asian / Native American ethnicity.
Why hide your black or white heritage? After all, who would want a friend / lover / spouse / employer who might treat you poorly if they knew what race your mother or father were? Sharing that information up front helps to cull out the idiots.
I say that if you accept yourself, the people who should matter in your life will accept and respect you as well.

I think thats a crying shame
I think my kids will end up being half black and half white and I will tell them from day one, no matter what happens you are mixed race, you are of 2 races and identify with both of them because you are lucky to be a part of 2 heritages.
Lenny Kravitz seems to have successfully done this - he has a huge circle of mixed race friends. Lisa Bonet, Nenah and Eagle Eye Cherry, Cree Summer, Jasmine Guy... Id like my children to remember there are millions of mixed people in this world and if it helps to identify yourself as your own race then so be it

I am not bi-racial but my paternal grandmother was (her mother black her father white). She was extremely fair but she didn't have a choice of races. In her day, a child was considered black even if he/she had 1% black blood. Today, I really believe it is up to the parents to ensure their child(ren) know both sides of their cultural heritage and have the opportunity to embrace both. Your friends parents did a poor job in helping her embrace both cultures. She should be proud to be a part of two very beautiful races of people. I pray she one day learns that she has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.

I have a nephew who is half black and half white. BUT he also has some Indian in his blood through his father. And believe it or not he claims Indian as his race as he has more rights/benefits.If it wasn't for the Indian, his mother would be claiming the race as black. But again NOT because of anything other than she can claim the minority status thing.

lol that he's. yet i for my area think of that its with the aid of fact the "black" is greater dominate and substantial then "white".. yet whilst your are mixed with white and black and nonetheless look white...greater desirable than in all likelihood no person will call you black i detect it extraordinary how "black" can some how, lots of the time over holiday very just about each and every race. Does that make the black race more desirable? hmm food for theory... Im no longer racist .. and that i understand there's no such ingredient as a severe-high quality race. that's purely extraordinary how there are maximum of racist claiming their race is the greater more desirable one, yet with a touch blending.. its long previous with the wind

You are human. So you belong to humanity. I have other races in me, I have mostly White in me, so that is what I am seen as and identify with, but if I were mixed with more races, I would just call myself a human. It is funny that humans do this to themselves, because there are many different races and breeds of animals in this world. Take cats for example, they do not mind who they mate with and they come in all sorts of colors, as long as that mate is healthy and able to bear kittens, that is all that matters.
