The "wings" are the edges of the stage, just in front of the curtain. So if you are waiting in the wings, you are waiting for your cue to go onstage. Often it's used to mean someone who is waiting for someone else to mess up so they can take over, like an understudy in a play.

On call and prepared to be on stage. When you say that your
boyfriend has someone standing in the wings, it means that if
he should decide to dump you, there's someone he knows who
will replace you. He has already picked out your replacement. If
a guy has someone waiting in the wings, it'll make you anxious
and feel as if you make the wrong move, your replaceable.
Any one who keeps someone waiting in the wings should be
DUMPED ON THE SPOT for even looking.

Hope this answers your question. :) Good luck!

This common phrase is quite self-explanatory, if used in the context of "acting on stage".

It is more commonly used as a sort of "metaphor"
for someone who is waiting around for circumstances to change. For instance, someone who is contemplating a divorce or break-up, most likely has someone ELSE "waiting in the wings" to take over!

It means your about to get you cue to come out on stage and perform. You're standing on one of the "wings" or sides on the stage out of site of the audience, but ready to come out.
