A very pertinent question and from a pertinent source. The avtar of the questioner Luvlina 79 shows that she is on the verge of the age when the young are considered good as cannon fodder. To me her anger does not appear to be so much against the recruitment of young persons to fight a war with no questions why but ther's but to do and die. There have always been cases right from the First World war to the recent Iraqi incident when there have been some prisoners of conscience who had nothing against compulsory military service as such but the wars they were sent. Does the US government feel that the young brats they send overseas are mature enough to know the pros and cons of the engagements? In fact they are constantly brain-washed to feel that this is their bounden duty. If so was Bill Clinton a morose not to have preferred to go the Vietnam war?
And supposing government has a very high opinion about the maturity of these young lads why do they not extend its benefits when it comes to choices in life. Like the beer for instance.Perhaps government means well by them as it is aware of the deletrrious effect of intoxicating drinks on young constitutions. But where does this solicitude(which is admittedly laudable) goes when it comes to the question of sending them to war?Of course they are regularly brainwashed in this regard and this is considered as their education. Is it?
Unfortuntely there is this tradition of compulsory military service for a period in the West. This is perhaps to keep the society in battle-prepardness should the need arise. This is also praised in countries where this practice is not there and is considered a best course to bring discipline in youth. In those area military serrvice is just a career like any other one and provided you qualify you can join the armed forces. There has never been any dearth of recruits though this is partly due to the lack of adequate employment opportunities Contrary to the presumption that the recruits are physically weak they are found to be quite strong and sturdy. There are also maraial traditions in some people where it is considered an honour to send at least one recurit to army.Indian army is a professionl army and is not affected by the political high and lows and has been praised for that.If only we could combine our compulsory military service with such professionalism there would not be this dichatomy as pointed out by this questioner. In fact it is not there the consideration fo restrictions in both being quite different.I do not feel that the adoption of this technique would in any way adversely affect our forces. The reasons a country has to go to war are various and multifaceted and it is not always possible to spell them in adequate detail to convince the people that be about the necessity of the engagement. If there is a professional army this question of excuses and explantion does not arise. As I always says our country had no business to join the First or even the Second World was as our national interests were not involved. However, at the same time it is our intervention which led to the victory of the democratic forces and defeated the fascist forces. On a higher plane therefore our participation was a wise decision. And yet there were people with troubled conscience in this move.In a professional army a breach of discipline only leads to Court Martial.

No war is an adult affair. They are all kids. And the drinking idea is a bad idea, there is any good association between war and alcohol, peace and alcohol, and so on. On the other hand, Old Guys are always stupid enough to prove themselves sending kids to die for their stupid ideas.

how about in asia kids soilders are 12 years old. and the youngest is some what 8 and 9 in burma. And the point they belive in is that in our country we belive we should defend it because united state is the country that have most freedom compare to other nations. In asia most kids in army dont have parents so they dont care much about love so they gave their lives to the military so they can get some foods in return they let the warlords use them as weapons.

Thanks for the ignorance, I'd say it's refreshingly new... but really it isn't. One of the reasons why I think the voting age should raised.
How about I pick only one politician. Senator John McCain. I'll let you research the whole story but all his sons are in the military. His youngest choose the Marines. He also served his country, ever noticed how his skin looks somewhat tight? That from the severe burns he received in Vietnam.

It's an all-volunteer military!!! Excessive alcohol consumption impairs thinking. Joining the military requires extensive thinking on a potential recruits part; at least I did.

Fighting for your country is worth a lot more than a beer. Going to Iraq doesn't automatically mean you are going to die. I would rather die for my country than die from alcohol poisoning. It is their choice to go. You are acting like they are forced to go to war.

Agree. I have a similar question: why Puerto Ricans fight for the USA if they can't vote for the President that send them to the war?
