There is a theory (please remember that I said theory, not fact) that there once was a race of rather small human like creatures. Supposedly, they lived in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. As humans moved in and took over the land, these creatures were forced to move to less desirable places to survive, and eventually they were completely wiped out, since those people didn't bother to set up reservations for their indigenous people. Most of the old fairy lore does come from Wales and Ireland, the two least desirable places in the British Isles supposedly. For some reason, Ireland has most of the pleasant fairy lore, like the Leprechaun, while Wales has most of the much darker fairy lore. There are a lot of books concerning Leprechauns in Ireland, but probably the best writing on the darker fairies in Wales is by Arthur Machen. They are fiction stories, but they are based closely on traditional folklore. Some of them are quite good, and more than a little scary in what they hint at.

There's no offence in your comment and it's a valid opinion.
It is daft to think that in this modern world of science and technology that the belief in faeries actually remains. However, like any traditional faith founded on ancient beliefs scientific explanation is not going to be successful in removing that belief.
Although there's no physical proof that they do exist people do still claim to see them. Why? Are these people crazy? Ill or disturbed? I don't believe that is the case. Many cultures around the world believe in ancestral spirits still playing a part in people's lives today. I think we are strongly connected with the beliefs of our ancestors. In the early days of stroy telling faeries were used as a means of informing people about the dangers that exist around them. But also morales and local law.
One major question with faeries is whether they actually belong to a race of real creatures. Belief in this must also link into UFOs and alien creatures, the subject of which has very strong links with folklore. Do I believe in them? Good question and a hard one to answer. I think faeries and the stories they are a part of are meant to teach us about the human condition. I'd love to think that a supernatural presence is real and dimensional and can interact with us at any time.

I haven't seen a fairy or sprite, but usually the reason why adults can't see them is because they've become too jaded to believe in stuff like that. I believe they exist, but because I'm no longer "innocent", meaning I'm not a child anymore, is the reason I have't seen any. I am mostly Irish, so I guess you could say that's why I believe in them. It all really depends on what you believe could be possible. If you don't believe it's possible they exist, you won't see them. Could you post the URL to this website? I'd very much like to see it.

absolutely!!!!!!!!!!! ive actually got one living next door to me . i too was quite scepticle until i experienced an overwhelming sensation of what ill call joy,.....nearly every time i passed the same spot the sensation would come over me again , and after talking to some of the other adults in the neighborhood they confided in me that their children had been telling them of the fairy whos name happens to be jene. if i lay on the ground close to the house of my neighbor and in the right light i can see the fairy dust trail that has been left with the fairy's coming and going. at first i thought i was nuts and kept all of this to myself, but as time passed and i would hear whispers of jene in social meetings i became perfectly convinced that i wasnt alone in my thoughts . jene as it turns out has been living there for a long long time and im told has golden brown hair and wears it in a pony tail at times she has green eyes and although she has a perfectly good pair of wings she....get this...... also rides a bicycle
