My boyfriend wears button-up shirts all the time and everytime we do laundry he loses a button on one of his shirts. I usually just sew a new one on but I feel this is going to get old after a while. I was hoping for a solution to prevent the buttons from coming off in the first place. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

The buttons fall off because the makers don't tie them off any more, so there is no knot at the end of the thread to hold them on. I got this hint from Linda Cobb in her Talking Dirty with the Queen of Clean book and it really works. Get a container of superglue that has the nozzel attachment on the top that looks like a tiny tube. Put a very small dab on the middle of the button over only the threads. Let it dry thoroughly before either washing or wearing. It seals the threads and keeps them from unravelling in the wash. I started doing it on my husband's shirts a couple of years ago and haven't sewn a button on since!

Instead of using thread to sew a replacement button, try using dental floss. I use this method and have never had one fall off after I replace it, even on heavy wool coats... I find the shred resistant kinds work best for this. Also, it helps to create a shank when you have finished sewing on the button. Look at step 5 here:

Always make sure to do all buttons, zippers, snaps up befoe placing in washer or dryer. This way they can not get caught and rip off , also prevents scratches on machines.

Yes fastening buttons and zippers is a good habit but also turn them inside out before washing this protects the colours.

take them to a dry cleaner, it is an investment, first appearances are a lasting appearance. The shirt is cleaned, starched and all buttons are replaced.
