not the sun! it causes wrinkles..i speak from experience...white and pale are in....you look like porcelain dolls..beautifull...if you want to use something though there are bronzers and tanning lotions that are temporary....you'll be living in your skin for many years...take care of it and yourself..

You should use a sunscreen to prevent burning and of course the risk for skin cancer. Basically SPF means the multiplication of the time it takes for skin to burn in the sun, the fixed time is ten minutes. So SPF 15 is 15 times 10, the time in minutes before a burn sets in. This equals 2 1/2 hours. If you wear SPF 15 for 3 hours, you will be thirty minutes beyond the time protection expires. Its within this time that you will tan. Do not go beyond three hours or you will burn and peeling means starting back at square one. Repeat as many times it takes and you will start to see a change in your skin color. Its best to be out around 2-4p.m. You might have problems if your third hour hits around noontime, the sun is strongest and can still burn you. Good luck.

Also, there is a new FDA approved sunscreen made by L'oreal called "Anthelios" that reduces wrinkles and they claim it has an "anti aging" effect. The product is very expensive, but looks very promising.

Go with sunscreen (at least 30 proof if you are that pale) and the Sun itself. Other tanning can really mess you up and lead to skin cancer, especially in paler people. The nice thing for the tanning industry is that it is impossible to link UV radiation affects to a source, so by the time the cancer develops, they can simply say, it was the Sun.

I use Palmer's Cocoa Butter Lotion for tanning and all the time for 30 years and my skin has not wrinkled like most people... I am 50 and I really don't look it, everyone thinks I am 35... I live in Arizona and we are in the sun all the time.... Cocoa Butter prevents not just wrinkles but it prevents stretch marks and you also get a dark tan... but I faithfully put it on at least 4 times a day, all over..... ask my hubby.... he loves my skin....

I'm very pale normally too. I bought that lotion that gradually gives you a glow.. and it works! It's not a huge difference, but I could definitely see a bronzey glow. But I also use tanning beds.. and those are so bad for you, and I know I shouldn't. But I look so much healthier when I'm tan. I look corpsish when pale.

fake tan? (healthier) any good over the counter one is acceptable

DO NOT USE a tanning bed/booth- very aging for the skin and can cause a nasty burn

OR- start off slowly laying in the sun while wearing a 30 sunscreen..slowly increase time in the sun as you start to show signs of a tan

Don't tan naturally or use a sunbooth. You will look wrinkled later and have skin cancer (most likely). If you must look tan, use some sort of fake tan from Jergens.

DONT FAKE BAKE. YOU GET CANCER, I like a self tanner and bronzer called 'liquid pantyhose' you can find it everywhere. Its wonderful. Also try Jergen's Daily Glow Lotion. Your tan builds naturally instead of all at once

You shouldnt tan. It increases your risk of cancer and will make your skin look like a tanned piece of ratty leather when you get old.

The highest SPF you can find.
