Measure the air temperature at the return air duct. Next measure temp. at an outlet duct, the one closest to the air conditioner is best. If difference is around 20 degrees Fahrenheit all is OK. The device to use would be any accurate thermometer that will fit into grill and capable of measuring from 50 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit should work just fine.

Drop the bulb end of a decent thermometer in the grid where the air comes out. Preferably one with something attached to the end sticking out so it doesn't fall all the way into the grill. That will tell you the temp. of the air being discharged.
Should be in the 20-30 degree range.

Take the temperature of the return air at the return air grill. Then go to the outlet that is the farthest away from the furnace and take that temp. if the difference is 15-20 degrees different than it is working good
