To get my first mobile, I had a huge argument with my parents the night before about how it came in handy if I was going to be late at soccer practice, or swim practice, or if I needed a ride. Also I explained how I always needed to use other people's mobiles because I didn't have one, and I felt guilty about wasting their money. Eventually my mum said that she would think about it.

The next day we went to the mall and I asked if we could just 'look' at the phones since my mother needed a new one. I ended up getting one too and my whole family, so it worked out great.

I'm not saying it will work for you, but it never hurt to try.

When I was in high school, I got a cell phone so that I could call my mom when I needed a ride. Perhaps you can emphasize that the cell phone would be used as a means of emergency contact. You can get one that is pre-paid, and they're pretty afordable as long as you don't expect to talk to friends on them. Show them that you're responsible and you can handle this extra expense. Try not to say that everyone has one, b/c then you'll be going into the bridge argument (aka if all of your friends jumped off a bridge, would you do that too?). Show them that this is a necessity for you and not b/c you think that you're being pressured by others to get one. Good luck!

Sorry, can't help you. I've been your age and I understand perfectly by your opening sentence- I gotta say, I admire the irony in soliciting for a good lie to prove one's sincerity. Especially to the 2 very people who are concerned most about your safety. Here's a tip: The thing I remember most from middle school was being told to look in the dictionary when I had a question. Just thought that might help you grasp what I'm trying to say here.

Insist that you go with a prepaid one, that way they wont end up with a massive bill if something goes wrong!! As others have said, emphasise the security point and just be happy to get a cheap phone, don't push your luck for a top end phone, be happy with a cheap one to begin with and then in a year or two you can try negotiating again! Good luck and I hope they give in!

Tell them that they could always get ahold of you if you had a cell phone. Also if you ever find yourself in danger a cell phone is a good thing to have. Parents fall for the safety arguement. If my kids were not adults, I'd get them cell phones for their own safety.
