The bottom line is that we really don't care unless that nation's dictator interferes with trade in some way. The US has had very cozy relationships with many dictators throughout our history. They were our allies until they did something to interfere with the market in their country. The latest example is Saddam. Reagan was very cozy with Saddam. In fact, there are pictures of Rumsfeld (while in the Reagan administration) shaking hands with Saddam. This picture was taken after Saddam attacked Iran in the 80's and used chemical weapons on them. It wasn;t until the 90's that Saddam interfered with the oil fields in Kuwait that we labeled him a dangerous tyrant who must be defeated at all cost. If he wouldn't have done that, we never would have had and Iraq war I or II. It's pretty hypocritical of us actually.

The answer to your first question is that Democracies make good neighbors and trading partners (economic and cultural) and they don't go to war with each other.
As for the second, dictatorships are oppressive by definition. No country has ever voted to be governed by a dictator. That's not how they draw their power.

the people of the US dont care, and why is dictatorship associated w/ oppresion:
they dont allow people to disagree w/ thedictators' s view, if you do disagree and happened to be vocal about it, you run the risk of being detained and tortured and possibly killed.
IT allows for more corruption from government officials, they could attribute anything to the "well he /she is anti-government, therefore we could do whatever we want to that person"
depending on what kind of dictatorship, it really limits economic growth, example: Cuba, Dominican Republic under Trujillo,
Russia during the cold war etc.
plus I got a question for you: show me a dictatorship that has achieved true growth for its people.

Dictators have no regard for individual rights, They are not freely elected by the people. The state owns everything the citizens are basically property of the state. Read the US Constitution,
"We the people, of the United States..." The Govt gets its power From the People. not the other way around. It says it right there in black and white and in easy to under stand language

Well, dictators are usually thought to be 'bad' because they march their people up against a wall and shoot em, or worse, cut off pieces and make em suffer and stuff.
In democracies, people are assumed to have rights, and are treated as though they did, including human rights. That's what makes a democracy better, there's limits on what your country can just do to you at will. I think a system of rights is better, personally...don't you?

America is successful and wealthy because of its values, not despite them It is prosperous because of the way it respects freedom, individualism, and women’s rights and the way it nurtures creativity and experimentation. Those values are our inexhaustible oil wells. Americans naturally gravitate toward societies that share those same values, and they recoil from those that don’t.
