I've never been in a long-term relationship, but I imagine that marriage is overrated. I suppose it's one for the insecure who want a bond, but true love is the best bond and marriage shouldn't matter. These days I don't think marriage is all that important (hah, screw you extreme religious types!) -- I theorise that it was created by ancient civilisations when women were suppressed and had no rights. Marriage gave them (and men sometimes) some sort of social status and security. In recent times, divorce settlements provided that security.

Call me romantic, a hopeless romantic if you will, but marriage seems to be for people who are so insecure of their relationships that they fear philandery or whatever, so they get married. From what I hear, it's not all that it's cracked up to be. It, in theory, offers a sense of security and commitment, but these qualities lie with the people... therefore, marriage is in itself, especially these days, unnecessary. However, it's seen as the utter most commitment, so... whatever

I thought my marriage would be forever... now divorcing but still plan to probably remarry someday...hopefully I know more what to watch out for and know it's not a good thing if your not 100% sure they are the one which I had doubts....not in a hurry to remarry because I don't want to be wrong again but don't enjoy the single life either....if I am sure he is the one with no doubts I am sure I will but kind of agree with other answer I don't need a piece of paper to prove my love its the commitment that counts
...I find it strange how we are married in a church but divorced in a courtroom....too many divorces but too many people marry for the wrong reasons not true love....only get married if you know for sure in your heart you could never be happier with someone else...I didn't but I have two beautiful kids so can't say it was a mistake

36 years to the same man! Now, that's a rarity these days! We were young, too: 19 and 22.

Marriage is a great institution.

I'm just not ready to be institutionalised.
