Tacoma is a melting pot & very diverse and the people are pretty liberal. most of all, you can still walk up to somebody and ask them a decent question or ask your neighbor to borrow the mower, without getting cussed out. the schools are great, nice malls for shopping, super restaurants and only 45 minutes from Seattle. it's the northwest, so you'll definitely have a few rednecks but most don't live in the city. i'd say the population is pretty well educated and since tacoma was rated one of the most popular cities to move too, there are a lot of people relocating there for professional jobs.

a lot of residents are also retired military, due to the fact that Ft. Lewis and McChord AFB are only 20 minutes away. many raised their families here, after leaving active duty. basically it's a great place to live. you have all the benefits of a city atmosphere, but with a friendly small town personality. if you'd rather not live in the city, their are great locales out in the burbs that are only 20-25 min away. on top of everything its close to the water and a beautiful place to live. i think you'll like it.

It's a mix. Not as liberal as Seattle, certainly. It has some very, very tough areas (gang activity). As well as some very, very nice areas (conservative). More young people are moving there (hip, liberal), as property is cheaper than Seattle, and it is the closest, largest town.

The thing about Tacoma--depending on where you are in the city, it smells bad. That's not a joke. There used to be paper mill operations on the tide flats, and whether it is a residual from those operation in combination with the tide flats,or just the smell from the tide flats themselves, it can make your eyes burn. The wind does blow the smell away at times, and people who live down there say they don't even notice it. I guess you can get used to anything, but I drove through last month during 90 degree weather, and it was pretty bad. I was stuck on I-5 in rush hour traffic for half an hour, and I "noticed" it the whole time. Just a heads up.

Is this where they gave up their right to bear arms? If it is they are cowards.
