Well if you lie on them and fall asleep, the drool from your mouth might moisten the ink and then you'd wind up with a backwards 1040 on your face. That would be funny!

Obviously, if you "lie on your taxes" - you are not making a innocent mistake. You may or may not get away with it. The IRS has a lot of programs to match what you report. When things don't match" - that will likely trigger a notice from the IRS and they will ask you to provide supporting documentation and usually give you 30 days to respond. More than likely, if are caught, you will be fined in the form of an interest charge, plus the back taxes you owe. Subsequent offenses could result in harsher penalties - including jail.

The IRS calls you in and asks you to explain the discrepancies in your taxes. If you can't explain them or tell them you lied, you face jail time and financial penalties. Only your tax lawyer knows for sure.

If you lie on your taxes you could find yourself lying in prison---that is, unless you're rich or famous or are in bed with Bush.

If you get caught, and eventually do, they book you a room at the Grey Bar Hotel for a few years - and fine you.

Sometimes nothing. But you could get audited, heavily fined and maybe even go to jail.

You can get audited and have to pay any differences plus fines. Not a good thing.
