My dog was found a box turtle yesterday, and he was chewing on him, and cracked his shell. Its not too serious, but I just wanted to know if I should take him to the vet to get checked out. Also what should I feed her? Do they like water?

You should take the turtle to the vet to get the crack checked out even if it's not too serious. Box Turtles usually eat small bugs and insects, you can find in like a garden, an some will eat veggies, like lettuce, and stuff like that. I have 2 turtles, and we keep them outside under our pool deck where it's closed in. And theres little bugs and stuff in there. They've been in there for like a year, and they're still alive.

i raise box turtles, if the crack is not too big just keep it clean, it should heal on its own as far as keeping her, a large aquarium is best but you can use a plastic laundry basket or a large cardboard box, get a large clay saucer for water & keep it
clean! feed her watermelon, tomatoes, strawberries (they like red food) cantaloupes or try different veggies dont use iceberg lettuce, use one of the other lettuces with dark green leaves you
can also use canned dog food (chicken based) usually when you first get one they are reluctant to eat, try all the red foods first also they love earthworms!
if you decide to turn it loose, try to find a safe place away from people and traffic, near water source and dont wait until fall to turn it loose as it needs to find a place to hibernate
is your turtle over 5-6 in long? does it have red eyes or brown?
red eyes mean male
take good care of it cause there arent many left

Box Turtles are mainly woodland turtles - they are basically land dwelling, but sometimes cool themselves off in puddles or pools of water (not a swimming pool). A Box Turtle can close up more completely in it's shell than other turtles, so it usually stays safe in an attack. They are renowned for their longevity, but not while in captivity. The turtle is better off set free in a wooded area where it can eat and exist in it's natural habitat.

DON'T use j.b.weld or super glue it's toxic to animals!!!Let it heal on it's own and box turtles don't like water to stay in they are land animals, they will eat lettuce and worms, there is turtle food you can get at the pet store. The turtle probably won't eat for a few days though I think it's because they are scared.

If u can afford it take it to the vet if not find an animal rescue group they'll take it of ur hands for free, and wean it back to health, a cracked shell may not look to serious but can actually can go deep. I had a box turtle or often called tortoises and Its shell was bitten thru by a coyote, it took a while for him to get back to health. One of my students now has him. They eat vegetation, but they'll go for mealworms if u offer it to them.

Best bet- release it. Sunshine, natural food, and comfortable surrounds are the best medicine for it. These guys survive shell injuries all the time.

By the way... the folks mentioning heavy veggie-based diets? Most studies show that boxies eat 75% insects, worms, and snails in the wild and that a diet with too many veggies can cause long-term problems. Just an FYI.

Yes take him to the vet, because sometimes we think that nothing happen, but then they start feeliing depressed or not feeling well, so its better for you to take him, just to make sure and prevent seriousness thet the turtle may have. Ofcourse turtles, like water, they like to swin and play around.
