If it truly is sand and grit...... your best bet would be to tear the engine down, clean and inspect all components, then replace worn parts and re-assemble the engine. Do not run an engine with grit in the engine. As far as carfax report............only vehicles claimed on insurance for damages will show up. If the owners have the know how to get them running and don't have insurance, you could end up purchasing a flood car without knowing. There are probably alot of cars going on the market that were flooded in Louisianna and Mississippi after the last hurricane.

The diesel oil mix, which one person has apparently never heard of, is used TO thin out the oil. This will help flush any debris in the engine which may not move with a thicker viscosity. Mental note, do not use more than a 1:3 mix, or you risk running it too thin. Also only run the engine for approx. 5 mins. This will allow the mixture to circulate throughout the engine without risking running at a high temperature. I not only own a 34 Chevy coupe, 454, which I use this trick on, but also have serviced most of the emergency generators (commercial, residential and industrial: Kohler Generators) from new york to virginia, to which this has worked wonderfully to remove sludge and help pinpoint possible problems.

Never ever ever ever do what the person above said to do with the diesel fuel. Never mix engine oil with diesel fuel to clean out an engine. You run the risk of thinning down the oil too much and hurting the engine. The grit you are seeing on the oil cap is not dirt. it is the same thing that is on the bottom of your valve cover which is sludge that has accumulated over time. If the engine was full of dirt... it would have been ruined a long time ago. An engine will not run long at all when dirt is allowed to enter.

crap in the engine is always bad. If you don't own it yet, ask if the engine can be thoroughly cleaned out before you take ownership. If not, no sale.
