Proper white gold is an alloy of gold and platinum; the platinum makes it "white". Yellow gold is all or mostly gold, so it has its own color.

It mainly depends on the carat of your gold. As you approach pure gold, there is less and less other metal in the alloy. (other metals are added to give the gold strength since gold is a very soft metal)

For the most part, non-pure gold gold is a mix of gold and copper.
White gold (which is always an alloy) will be a mix of gold and either nickel or platinum.

Yellow Gold is pure (or nearly pure) gold, and gold is indeed yellow, when its alloyed with a lot of nickel and platinum and coated with Rhodium it takes on a white shine.

White and yellow gold are alloys, solutions containing more than one metal. Gold and silver are often found naturally alloyed in what has been called 'electrum' from ancient times. For more details, please refer to my previous Best Answer on this topic.
