Not sure where you plan on traveling from, but here is the site for the Empire Builder Amtrak route, which goes from Chicago to Seattle/Portland, and across the top of Montana.

You can bring up a map of Montana that has cities marked on it to compare and see how far the train goes from where you are headed. Also, the routes list the stops.
