FYI for anyone who is listening: it really is spelled "just deserts", check it out on snopes.

Anyhoo...
The retributive theory says that criminals know they're breaking the law and they deserve to be punished.
CON
1) It's not concerned with rehabilitation, it's only about "an eye for an eye" punishment. Step out of line and you will get whacked kind of thing.
2) It has no thought for the future of the individual, and it does not necessarily discriminate between crimes. That is, it does nothing to assure that the individual won't commit the same crime in a more evasive way. They will still commit the crime, but will be more careful about it because they don't want the punishment. The criminal does not see the act as "wrong" in a moral sense, they only see it as wrong because the people punishing him say it's wrong, and the criminal then feels even more disconnected with society.
3) There is no deterrence except for the memory of a previous punishment. So first-time offenders have no reason to fear this type of punishment.

PRO
1) Vengeance feels good to society.
2) Punishment is warranted in many cases.
3) It may help with recividism.

Just Deserts Theory

Just deserts, as in the Sahara, the Mohave, or the Southern Plain? Do you mean just desserts pertaining to crime and punishment?

Don't know; someone with this field of expertise needs to reply. I just catch spelling errors.

p.s. I stand corrected. If a soldier deserts while stationed in the Mohave Desert he will get his just deserts. With luck, he'll be fed prickly-pear jam for his desserts.

"The spelling is corrrect in this field"??? Huh? Shouldn't there be two r's in correct and three s's in dessert? If you really mean desert, then I don't know what you're asking.

Yes, "just deserts" is the correct spelling of the theory. "Just desserts" is different, though conceptually similar.

Well, it's hard to say that someone gets what they deserve in any situation. Seeing as all people have different values.
