Is the problem from physical discomfort of not able to turn off the mind and its imagination? If it is the latter, there are multiple ways to remedy it but, you must learn to replace the thoughts you now have, with something much different....If it is the former, get the problem taken care of...
Some things you may want to try.. some have been mentioned in answers before;
1. Make sure your tongue doesn't touch the roof of your mouth
2. Count sheep that you can see jumping over a fence
3. Some suggest meditation
4. I have an exercise that has seemed to help many
5. Depending on your age, a warm glass of milk or, a 1/4 glass of wine.

Friz, I just answered two others with the same basic question. I will give you the quickie. Your body produces Melatonin to aid in sleep. Sometime you don't produce enough, as all aging people experience. So you can get a supplement at any drug store otc. One pill is enough, more will not help and this is not addictive. Other things that will help: No eating or drinking after 6PM. No stimulating reading, TV or Movies after 8PM. Hot bath just before bed time, and have regular bed time. By the way, Melatonin is not medication, it is a hormone and is natural. take about thirty minutes before bedtime. Good Night

My dad has trouble sleeping, sometimes I do too.
I recommend eating a small snack before bed.
Dairy products such as cheese and milk help you sleep as well as fruits like bananas. They help me.
Also, I burn incense. The scent is relaxing and scents such as Lavendar and Pear Vanilla are very good. They even have an incense called 'Peace of Mind' and it is my favorite, I could fall asleep right now If I burned it =D
I even take out my mp3 player and listen to music too. No hard stuff. Listen to soft music and it helps relax the mind. I actually prefer listneing to music in a different language, like latin and japanese. I don't know why, but it just helps more, haha.
You could also try a method to hyptnotize yourself... Research on this topic more and you'll find good stuff on it. I can't really explain it good =| Lay on your back..And in your mind you tell each body part to go to sleep, until you feel each part go numb; starting with the feet and ending at the brain. I've done it before, it takes about 10 minutes, but it will guarantee sleep ^^'
Counting sheep and whatnot, never helps. I try thinking about something good, exciting, something I want to happen etc..and before I know it, I'm asleep ^_^
I hope this helps in some way, this is what I do when I have sleep issues.

Melatonin which is in the vitamin section of your local store.
It gives some people headaches, though. But I believe most sleep aids have that side effect no matter what they are/
Taking one Benadryl tablet per night is also recommended by drs. for sleep.
Now these are solutions if you have a MILD sleep problem.
You really should talk to a dr because you may have sleep apnea or some other problem if you wake up frequently during the night.
Your doctor may have to prescribe something if it is more serious than a minor sleep problem, which is what these two items are for.

Probably the only natural remedy that works is Melatonin. It is exactly the hormone your body produces that helps keep you asleep. As people age, they produce less and less. A Melatonin tablet only stays in your body about three hours and has no reported side effects of any sort. Take it twenty minutes before bed and you should have a much easier time falling asleep.

I suggest Shaklee's natural Gentle Sleep Complex. It contains a complementary blend of herbs - valerin, chamomile, and passion flower - that promotes calm and restful sleep. For centuries these herbs have been used safely for occasional sleeplessness.

Laying down at at the same time does help. I like to do Pilates at night it stretches my muscles then take a warm bath. Last I wear an eye mask so I cannot look around. That made a hugh difference. I take Lunestar myself when I do not have my mask to help. good luck
