I think i saw a passenger pigeon or a bird very similar to it. this bird is supposed to be extinct. i have been occasionally seeing this bird. I havent been able to keep track of it but i have noticed for about a year now. i checked out websites to see the physical features and such of the bird and it resembles it quite well. is it possible that an extinct bird is not really extinct or could i have been mistaken?

It's very possible the passenger pigeon is not extinct there were millions of these birds not longer than 100 years ago. My belife is they are not extinct. Try and get a photo of it if possible. Send it to a university to be checked out. If it is the passenger pigeon then your name and the university's name will go down in the history books. And it will bring you a very good payoff to find this bird and it's nest.

Well they did recently re-discover the Ivory-billed Woodpecker so I guess anything is possible. But, there are a few dove species that could look similar to the Passenger Pigeon, such as the Zenaida Dove, Mourning Dove, and Spotted Dove. It could also be someones exotic pet dove that has escaped. Try to get some photos and submit them to an expert.

The best thing to do would be to report your sighting to a qualified professional or professional organization. The Cornell School of Ornithology for one or the National Audubon society would be a good place to start. They can direct you to proper resources and people who could more thouroughly assist you.
