Yes, it is bad for the wood furniture and piano. It is bad for two reasons... first, the relatively rapid temperature changes.... hot during day, cool at night... second, because of the lack of humidity control... this, along with the temperature changes, will cause the wood to change moisture content.... which, in turn, will cause it to warp, crack, split, check, twist, cup, etc.
It's not even a good idea to place a piano against an outside wall, inside the home, because of the temperature variation....let alone leave one out in a garage.
If your mom no longer wants the items, she should go ahead and sell them, now, before they are ruined. If there is some reason why they need to be moved out of the home temporarily... I'd find another solution.
If they cannot be left in the home, try to find a climate controlled storage place for them... If that cannot be done..... she could install a large air conditioner in the garage, to keep it from getting too hot during the day... AND... a de-humidifier, to reduce the moisture change. This is a garage, so I suspect a concrete floor.... AT the VERY LEAST... put down plastic, before moving the furniture and piano out there.... concrete acts as a straw, literally pulling ground moisture up thru it, and this will do an extensive amount of damage to wood.... and any metal left laying on it, heheheh.
You can expect the piano to go out of tune, in short order.
My suggestion is to leave them in the home, if at all possible, where they will stay in a climate controlled atmosphere.

Well it really depends...How hot is hot and cool is cool. If the temperature difference is 20 decrees, I would avoid it, but if it is only 10 degrees its probably ok. Also you want to make sure it is a moisture free area.

Heat and cold cycles will warp the wood, possibly, depends on how long you want to leave it in there, I wouldn't advise more than a couple weeks.

I'm not sure, but I would think it would really depend on the wood finish and humidity level.

It will warp the wood and cause it to crack, ruining any monetary value the pieces may have.
