Plato started all the hoopla about the lost city of Atlantis.

History - The Lost City of Atlantis

Around 350 BC, Plato wrote about a beautiful island in the Atlantic Ocean that went under the ocean waves in one day and one night. It took two books to describe the history and details of this almost magical island. For years people have been looking for this mysterious lost city, Atlantis.

Living In Atlantis
Plato describes the Atlantians as great engineers and architects. There were palaces, harbors, temples and docks. The capital city was built on a hill and surrounded by rings of water, which were joined by tunnels large enough for a ship to sail through. A huge canal connected the outer rings of water to the ocean. On the outskirts of the capital city there were huge fields where farmers grew the city's food. Past the field there were mountains where wealthy villagers lived. Plato goes great detail about the amazing buildings - complete with hot and cold fountains, shared dining halls and stone walls covered with precious metals.

Atlantis - Just A Story?
For over two thousand years the story of Atlantis was just a story. Then, in the late 1800s, an American named Ignatius Donnelly became fascinated with the story and wrote a book called Atlantis, the Antediluvian World, which became a bestseller. Ignatius studied flood history from Egypt to Mexico and believed that Plato was recording an actual natural disaster. Since then, several books have been written about the lost city.

Atlantis - Facts And Fiction
The most believable theory about Atlantis came from the Greek archaeologist Angelos Galanopoulos in the late '60s. He theorized that around 1500 BCE, a massive eruption from a volcano ripped apart the island of Santorini in the Mediterranean and probably wiped out most of the civilization on the Greek islands and regions of Greece. Angelos suggested this disaster is the one that sank Atlantis. If this is so, then he must have his dates wrong - or does he? He reasons that when the story was being translated, the Egyptian symbol for 100 (a coiled rope) was mistaken for the symbol for 1000 (a lotus flower). This changes the date from 9000 years ago to 900 years ago. The only thing wrong with this explanation is that Plato specifically said the city was near the Pillars of Hercules, which are thought to be nowhere near Greece.

Where Could Atlantis Be?
The exact location of the lost city of Atlantis has been questioned by many people, like British Royal Air Force photo interpreter J.M. Allen. He is convinced Atlantis is in Altiplano, near the Andes Mountains, in Bolivia. The famous psychic channeler Edgar Cayce believed the remains would be found off the coast of Florida near Bimini Island. Other people think it's lost somewhere in Central America, the China Sea or Africa. Others believe that Atlantis is nothing more than a myth.

Whether Atlantis existed or not, I do know that at least four Caribbean and Pacific islands are remnant masses of landmassses that were much larger and older than the islands themselves. For the past 10 years I have been diving off and around several Islands. So far, I have found a set of subterranean steps leading from a mountain facing the Atlantic Ocean (on a small island) and descending into the sea for at least another 20 feet. Another diver has found and photographed marble slabs off Bermuda and I have discovered some very intricate carvings and an ancient esoteric center that functioned during the "Stellar Mythos" on a small island. Not unlike Easter Island, we are finding carved heads over 30 feet tall. Scientific analysis has to be undertaken to ascertain or refute our claims that these edifices were or were not man-made.
Since every action has an equal and opposite reaction, let us suppose there was a large global catastrophe--say global warming. It is possible that continents could break up and become islands and that tectonic plates could push up surrounding ocean floors around current islands to form new continents. Just perhaps, there was such a catastrophe in the form of a global flood. I have a feeling that certain authorities will not be too excited with the findings because evidence seems to be pointing towards a system of civilizations rising and falling, earth rising and falling--in essence that type of evidence would negate the beliefs that civilizations had an upwardly mobile rise from "Primitive to Educated." So far, the evidence on Easter Island and the Pyramids of Egypt have survived destruction of books through libraries' burnings and continue to contradict established myths. Here is one secret I will reveal: many of the etchings we have been calling primitive art, might just be preserved writings from earlier civilizations. Just maybe there might be more Rosetta Stones to be found.

Yes, sort of.
It is the island of Santorini, in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Greece, more than likely. There is a little bit of the former island left today, but about 3/4 of it exploded off the face of the earth in an enormous volcanic explosion.
Santorini has a small population today, it was repopulated as the original population was completely wiped out. Archaeological evidence shows that the people of Santorini were wealthy, very cultured, and lived the good life. It was a beautiful place.
Santorini exploded about the time the legend of Atlantis began, and its archaeological and geological evidence aligns with the Atlantis legend. The reporting of the Atlantis legend was secondhand information to Plato, I believe, and was written in the Epic Poem style. When you take that into account, the two places mesh even better. There is not a better explanation. Even if the whole story is mostly fiction, and much of it is, the idea certainly came from the explosion of Santorini as the similarities are just too great. The legend of Atlantis is mostly just that......legend. But, it in all likelihood is just an exaggeration of the true story of Santorini

There was an island in the Mediterranean, Santorini, which had an advanced Minoan culture. It was a very rich, powerful civilization, not because it was warlike, but because it was peaceful and they were traders. Several years before Atlantis was first written about, there was a huge volcanic eruption on the island which literatty ripped the island in half, one half sliding into the sea. Divers have since found an underwater city there, with beautiful artwork still intact. Just enough time passed between the time of the eruption and the Greek legend that it could have been exaggerated to be the original Atlantis, and we have added all types of details to modernize the story ever since then.

Call me crazy , but I believe there was. I think that civilization was here on earth and advanced and advanced to the point that they destroyed themselves, several times. Also think that those UFOs are earthlings coming back from whatever planet they escaped to during one of those times that we destroyed civilization (and the earth). Think about it. Eons ago there was only 1 continent on the planet. South America fit right up against Africa - that's why the pyramids, construction, art, writing, etc. are so similar - they were just neighbors at one time. The continent split and parts (Atlantis) came off and were left in mid ocean as islands as the new continents drifted apart. Eventually Atlantis was sucked under into the mid-ocean rift/abyss. This took many thousands of years.

Plato started this legend and he's been known to make stuff up just for the sake of argument. We have as much evidence about Atlantis existing as we do of Socrates existing.

But it's possible that there was an island elsewhere in the Mediterranean or just beyond the Gibraltar Straits that sunk due to an earthquake. It's highly unlikely that it was named Atlantis, however, or had an advanced civilization.

Yup. I died there.

Really.

All I remember is a control room, and a BIG wall of water coming at us. A while ago I saw a show that said Atlantis was about where the Azores are. This really feels right to me. I never did believe it was on Santorini or Thera. Not sure what the Bermuda Triangle was about, but I think the Crystal was based there.

yes, actually two. Atlantis was very technologically advanced and basically destroyed itself.(sound familiar?). Lemuria saw what happened and chose to leave. there is some thoughts that when the island (contenient) of Lemuria was destroyed, part of it became the western part of the US. that would explain a lot of the faults there.

Atlantis was in the Atlantic between Europe and N America
Lemuria was in the Pacific.

The sad part is that until we as a people understand our history, we are doomed to repeat it.

I do think that there was an Atlantis, and a Lemuria too. I think that the discovery of advanced underwater ruins such as roads, and pyramids, at various locations around the world, are pretty solid proof of this. I think these places may have been destroyed in the great flood told about in the Bible.

I think so. But not called Atlantis. The Egyptians have a legend about it under another name. It goes back thousands of years. I think it was the island of Santorini. They had indoor plumbing, hot and cold running water.....all the things that are in the story.
