More couples are "enhancing" their sex lives by allowing someone else in (pun intended). Does it help or hurt in the long run?

Swinging can help or hurt a marriage depends on so many factors. In ours it helped. It opened our communication and trust for each other. I have seen it hurt. Swinging is NOT a bandage for a bad marriage. I wish all those with a bad marriage would stay out of it; it gives swingers a bad image. Most are very stable and happy couples that tend to have free spirits that don’t rely on western civilization or religion to give them morals.

I have been on both sides of this fence. There is no right answer. I think that in most Western marriages, we are very hung up on the wrong things (Dang Victorians!), and the baggage that most people carry makes the experience harmful in the long run. That said, I have met many couples who did well with that lifestyle. Bottom line, both people have to be comfortable, not just agreeable.

I think perhaps it is different for all couples. Some couples are very traditional, and prefer to keep it on a one on one basis, for fear of breakup. But on the other hand, there are couples who know how to go about it, who trust eachother enough to be aware that if they bring someone else in, its purely sexual. I am involved w/ someone for 7 years now, and about a 1 and 1/2 ago, we began experimenting w/ other women. It definately enhanced out sexual relationship together, but it also took a long time to establish certain rules and trust. And believe it or not, because of these experiences, we are closer and reach understandings of one another in all aspects of out personalities, not just sexually. So it really depends on the couple.

A few couples find it spicing things up, even afterwards. But most couples in the long run do not survive. One or both feel guilty or jealous, and this builds into something that wasn't intended by either partner. If you are very sure, and have a few rules and follow them so there are no misunderstandings, then by all means go ahead.

Personally, I wouldn't do it. Sooner or later, I'd be wondering if my spouse was enjoying things more with someone else and the possibility of divorce would seem pretty high. I think it would hurt a relationship in the end.

Depends on the couple.

It's like Dr. Ruth said once. There are happy couples out their enjoying swinging, but they don't come to me with problems if they aren't having any.

I believe it would cause a lot of problems. not just the sex. but much deeper problems. Loosing respect for each other, cheating would be more apt to follow. No way! it is wrong when you add out side people in your marriage. what you have as a one on one with your spouse is to precious .

i think it will hurt in the long run. i know of one guy who had a threesome with his friend and wife and now he is getting a divorce. She moved in with him too. Watch some porn, use some toys but dont let a third person in
