without electricity, we whouldnt have air conditioning, refridgeration, television, and quite a few other things. Why dont people know about this problem? Do the journalists put too much empahisis on smaller stories?

Absolutely. . . we need to focus on infrastructure in this country in a serious way, because a lot of the US is more like a third-world country than a first-world one due to bad grid, bad sewers, bad bridges, and above-ground phonelines.

There have been isolated 'brownouts' and other power interruptions this summer on the east coast, especially New York that have received spotty media coverage.

I don't know whether the real solution is more media coverage, though. This is one of those non-sensational, unsexy issues that needs real regional community and government leadership to fix all the problems caused by Enron-type excesses and the irresponsibility engendered by the deregulation of utilities to fix it properly and for all. Then, maintenance must be set up and followed through to make sure it doesn't happen again.

That's why when I hear people talk about politicians being 'cute' or 'someone to go fishing or partying with' it sends me into a slow burn.

Yes and no. Actually ppl DO know about the problem - as witnessed by the rolling "brown-outs" across the nation. The real issue is what is being done to prevent total lose of power in certain areas. Most hospitals, police depts, fire stations, etc, have auxiliary generators to use as back ups. I have one for my house! Unfortunately they still need gas and oil to operate but I'm looking for one that runs using a "flux capacitor" sys. Maybe I can change over to Solar Panels and Wind powered generators.

As to smaller stories; I feel every story reported is - in it's own way - a big story. Each story points to a different cause and we only see the effect, i.e. A crackhead (from a dysfunctional family) has a problem over some crack and shoots it out with another crackhead (from a broken family) and a stray bullet punctures the kidney of an otherwise uninvolved 4 y/o girl in an unrelated house, ad invini tum. We only hear about the shoot-out b/c it sells, and the little girl gets only a blurp as a side-note. Truth is, there's a lot going on here!

Yes. All the media wants to focus on is what is happening in the Middle East. The major networks could care less about the people dying here at home from the deadly heat. Watch the weather channel to get the latest news on what is going on with the heat.

The power grid "crisis" doesn't become a newsworthy event until there is a an actual outage.

The "smaller" stories get the emphasis because they are what is happening NOW.

Pithy query. Our power grid(s) are extremely vulnerable and it's my hope that Homeland Security is giving it the interest it deserves.
But about 'reporting' on the subject...maybe the less we see and hear in the media about the subject the better...for the same reason I think it unwise to announce where the president is headed, when and where troops are going to be deployed, etc.

YES I do but this is a case of big business in bed with big government. Any time you have government regulation the consumer gets ripped off. Just remember what happened to our telephone service when it got deregulated. Rates went way down and service got way better.. The government will never release complete control of any business but regulated utilities will continue to be a consumer rip off.
