I'm running on Windows XP with a DSL hookup. I do not have to even be surfing the net for internet Explorer to open dozens of windows that looks to be Spanish--I can't read it, but I'm guessing- adult sites. I've scanned my system for viruses using Avast and I've quarantined some viruses and trojans, but it didn't stop the pop-ups. I've installed the Yahoo! toolbar and set the pop-up blocker to the highest security setting. Anything any of you can recommend?

I can only tell you what has worked for me and I spend a lot of time surfing the net. You obiviously have hijackers or adware on your computer. You may also have a virus, worm, or trojan or several. You may or may not be able to handle this problem yourself, it probably depends on whether or not your root directory has been infected.
First of all if you can get online then download "Adaware" it's one of the best free adware removal tools out there. Also if you can download "Skybot.net" you will have another excellent tool for adware and virus removal. These are user friendly sites and can be managed without superior computer skills.
If you are unable to get online or stay online then obtain the services of a "recommended & qualified" computer person to remove the problems AND give you some good tips on how to avoid similar situations in the future. This can be a simple or complicated problem depending upon you particular situation.

You can download AVG 7.1 Anti-virus for free off of the internet. I did a few days ago. I ran 3 other ad aware & spy sweeper programs & they didnt find anything. But I downloaded AVG & it found 38 the first time! I am not sure what the website is that you download it from but you can try to google it. If you cant find it just let me know & I will look it up. Hope this help you out!

Popups are are sure sign that your computer is infected with spyware or adware. Probably from some so called "free" software that you may have downloaded. The reason that the software is free is that they bombard your computer with advertisements. Free smilies, screen-savers and music sharing programs such as Kazza, and Limewire are notorious for being bundled with this crap.

Do this. It will take a couple hours.

1. Scan for virus and remove (free online scan) with BitDefender

2. Scan for trojans and remove (free online scan) with Ewido

3. Scan for ad/spyware and remove (free download) with Spybot Search & Destroy

Your version of Internet Explorer needs to go.
First of all, you need to clean out your computer. I recommend AdAware and Spybot, both of which are available for free at download.com. Run Spybot, then AdAware, then Spybot again.
Then download and install something besides the public release of Internet Explorer. I recommend either Firefox or IE7 beta. When prompted, make this your default browser.

I use Google's pop-up blocker - don't like Yahoo at all for that. Besides, I have the Google toolbar to do my searches. It works well blocking pop-ups, and if I actually want something to pop up, I just have to hold the CTRL (control) key down while clicking.

This is called spyware. This means that it is already installed on your computer and you need to remove it.

Download and run ad-aware and spy-bot search and destroy. This should get rid of the infection. Afterwards, download and install Microsoft Defender. This will provide real time protection against spyware for the future.

Good luck!

If they are coming through even with a pop-up blocker then you probably have a virus or ad-ware. You need to scan for both - they are not the same and one scanner will not necessarily catch the other.

Ad Aware and Spybot S&D are two free programs that are very good at dealing with trojans. You should try them both as they will find different things. Also check the spyware forums - there are some very helpful people there who can walk you through stuff you wouldn't try on your own.
