Vinyl is less likely to get dented. Go for vinyl! Steel seems like it would be expensive, too. We have vinyl siding and we just LOVE it! I used to scoff at it, but it's a really cost-effective way to make your home look attractive and adds insulation value.

There is also Hardiboard. It is a cement based product that once installed has a great durability. It comes in 4x8, 4x9, and as lap siding. It can be painted or for more money can be ordered in several colors. Its sort of brittle to work with but may last longer overtime.

Have to second that HardiPlank vote.
Cementitious fiber plank siding as it is called is AWESOME. it never molds or rots. Paints like wood and holds that paint.
You can also get it preprimed or factory painted.

If you cannot afford hardiplank upfront- though it is cheaper lifetime- a .046 or thicker vinyl is a decent option.

Good luck

definately vinyl - never dents, holds up better, in my opinion fades less than alum, and looks much better too.

Vinyl. Doesn't rust and it can be painted years on down the road if needed.

you should consider cedar if you want the exterior to look the best. It also allows you any color option any time ya want.....Vinyl is the cheapest, looks ok when installed right, and it's a pretty fair market, usually 200.00-300.00 a square

vinyl does not need to be painted, it resists denting, it is more tolerant to changes in the weather, and it is easier to replace and repair...

Steel. It may cost more, but it looks better and there's less maintenance.
