I was in our garage and saw this bug or beetle on the floor- it was large, probably an inch long and half an inch wide, and built like a tenk- greenish-brown and seemed very lethargic

Well some more detail would help, but from the sound of its size it could be a scarab beetle of some sort (family: Scarabaeidae). An insect that size, may be Osmoderma, a large genus of scarab bettles, I have seen many of these out in Eastern Canada, so it may be one of those.

I have enclosed some photos here of what it might be, have a look at these and see if you can find it, click on the image and it will come up bigger and tell you what it is!

If it hissed at you it could be a June bug.
