I have a 1989 Honda Accord and I want to place a large magnet on the tranny pan to collect any metal shavings floating in the transmission oil. Maybe there is another place to put a magnet that would work as well.

there is no pan on a honda transmission, there is a unservicable screen in the valve body, if you want you can put an inline filter in the return side of the transmission cooling lines, but no magnet.

All transmissions have an oil pan. They all also have a very fine mesh screen at the bottom to catch the metal bits. You really don't need the magnet.

no all transmissions have oil pans. most modern japanese vehicles dont. a magnet isnt going to make or brake ya but not servicing it can cost you a bundle. on your year of honda i cant remember but i do know honda recommends a tranny flush every 7500 miles on there newer vehicles

flush the tranny when you change the fluid and you should be fine.
