Read "Empire: How Britain Made the Modern World" by Niall Ferguson. Even as a black englishman son of West Indian immigrants, I was still able to appreciate the positives.

In many Countries that were part of the Empire the systems of Law and Government where formed during Empire. The empire provided a more or less stable political environment that kept warring factions apart, saving lives.
Countries such as India had an infrastructure, such as railways, left over from Empire that is one of the reasons they are becoming a world economic power now.
Other, 'good' things from empire include the ownership of slaves being outlawed, strong ties to the UK that enables economic support and legal migration.

The Galactic Empire was defeated by the Rebel Alliance. Luke Skywalker was the leader during the latter part of the wars. But, alas, he brought back his father, Anakin Skywalker from the evil grasp of the Dark Side of the Force! So in essence, both father and son defeated The Galactic Empire! I hope this helps!!

The best thing to come out of the British empire is the Commmonwealth and International Test Cricket. Other than that it just caused us a lot of **** and people are still whining about "ooh the British were nasty to my ancestors 200 years ago" and using it to direct hatred against us even today. Pisses me off.
