If you could go back in time and bring one item with you: where would you go and what would you bring?

Tell me what time period and where in the world?
What would you bring and why?

I presuming that the point of the question is to best affect the past for the good. Otherwise, the one item that I would want to take with me, regardless of where and when, would be my time machine so I can get back!

I thought about this for a bit. Obviously it would have to be something that would work in the past, so no desktop computers in the Middle Ages. I think that my answer would have to be a book.

My choice is to go to France, circa 1868, and bring a book that covers the history of Europe from the Franco-Prussian War to World War II. If somehow this got into the hands of Napoleon III, maybe he'll avoid the mistake of falling into Bismarck's trap and declaring war on Prussia. If he's too arrogant to listen (which I think he would be), I would then hope that Bismarck get a hold of it and work to keep Kaiser Wilhelm II from screwing up German foreign policy. In other words, I hope that somehow we can avoid the horrors of the two World Wars by putting a halt to some of the primary causes.
