When you delete the pictures and videos you don't want anyone to see or to be in your computer, delete them, by right-click and selecting "Delete"

But also, make sure to go to your Recycle bin and empty it all :)

Simply deleting the files and emptying the recycle bin is not enough. Pieces of the files can still remain. There are varying degrees of scrubbing of the data that yo can do.

Perhaps, one of the free and easier means for Windows users is to use CCleaner. They have a setting for Secure Deletion with several overwrite standards.

You might also want to read the SANS white paper on file deletions.

You need to shred them...there are two programs I know offhand that are free and can do the job...CCleaner and Spybot Search & Destroy (if you use Spybot's advanced options, there's a secure shredder)...if you just delete and empty your recycle bin, they are still on the disk until you either run out of space, and they get overwritten, or reformat.
Question 2...if you're using Windows' search, (this is for XP, though I think 2000 is the same...earlier versions I'm not sure of), when you get to the search menu, go to "More Advanced Options," open the tree and click "Search hidden files and folders." Of course, if you've already shredded them, they won't show up again.

Permanently delete. Almost no such thing, sure it is "gone" from your view but still there. You could recover most of your files with a data recovery program. Just never get in trouble with the FBI....they will dig up everything. Just right click on "Start" on your main screen then click search. You can check a box to search for hidden files.

Data on hard disk can be recovered using specialised tools even after formatting the disk multiple times. So please forget about permanent deletion.
I believe you are more concerned over stuff that you may have downloaded from the internet which is x-rated.

To delete the file (and ensure that it doesnt stay in your recycle bin) press shift + delete buttons on you keyboard together.

If you want to remove content that you may have browsed from Internet Explorer please go to
Tools => Internet Options
Here under the general Tab click on clear history and delete files and delete cookies.

This will clear traces of all sites that you have visited.

Reformat your computer. Make sure you have all of your software first though.
