The five low-calorie sweeteners below have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration and are safe for both pregnant women and children.
Aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal, Sugar Twin) is a combination of two amino acids, phenylalanine and aspartic acid. It is two hundred times sweeter than table sugar. It can be used in moderation by diabetics. One packet of Equal is the same in sweetness as two teaspoons of sugar. The average amount used supplies no calories. Individuals who have phenylketonuria (PKU) and cannot metabolize phenylalanine, or are sensitive to aspartame, should not use it.

Saccharin (Sweet’N Low, Sweet Twin, Necta Sweet) is not metabolized and passes through the digestive system unchanged. It is a noncaloric sweetener produced from an organic compound. It is 375 times as sweet as table sugar and can be used in moderate amounts by diabetics.

Acesulfame K (Sunett and Sweet One, Sweet and Safe) is not metabolized and is excreted unchanged by the kidneys. It can be used in moderation by diabetics. One packet of Sweet One is equal to the sweetness of two teaspoons of sugar. It can be used in cooking and baking.

Sucralose (Splenda) is not well absorbed and is excreted unchanged. Splenda is the only artificial sugar substitute that is made from sugar. It is 600 times sweeter than sugar. Splenda or sucrolose is often used in baked goods, soft drinks, chewing gum, frozen dairy desserts, fruit juices and gelatins. One of the unique attributes of sucralose is that it can be used virtually like sugar without losing any of its sugar-like sweetness, even in applications that require exposure to high temperatures. Therefore, it can be used in baked products as well. More than 100 studies over 20 years have found no link between splenda and any health problems. It can be used by pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers.

Neotame (made by The NutraSweet Co.) is quickly metabolized and completely eliminated from the body. This sweetener is designed more for food industries than the direct consumer or tabletop sweetener market. The main markets for this product are soft drinks, yogurt, frozen dairy desserts and chewing gum. It would take approximately 8,000 teaspoons of sugar to equal 1 teaspoon of neotame.
There has been much controversy and debate as to the safety of using these sugar substitutes during pregnancy. Saccharin has received a lot of attention since it can cross the placenta and may remain in fetal tissues. I believe there is no concern if you use them in moderation. Many health organizations and healthcare providers suggest limiting artificially sweetened foods in your diet to only 2 or 3 servings a day. Examples of a serving would be: a 12 ounce can of pop; ½ cup of pudding, ice cream, or gelatin product; one bowl of sweetened cereal; or one portion of a bakery item. Discuss the use of low-calorie sweeteners with your healthcare provider, especially if you are diabetic or need to control calorie intake.

That's a great question. I want to know that answer too. I'm pregnant too and I think we shouldn't drink anything with sweet'n'low or complete artificial sweetners. Splenda is in it's test run still and I don't know if they are sure whether it is ok or not. I think probably the best bet is to drink things with splenda if you are going to drink things with artificial sweeteners. From what I have read about and heard Splenda is much better for you than the others. I guess the best bet though is to drink things that are naturally sweet like juices or if you want extra sweetener, put honey into your drink. It's natural and if you are diabetic like me than it should help stabilize your blood sugar. Hope that helps.

Good question, it isn't OK for anyone to drink or consume anything flavored with splenda or any other sugar substitute, infact sugar itself isn't all that good for you either. Consumption of such products during preganancy, though haven't really shown any major side effects (at least up to birth), is probably not the healthiest thing you can do for yourself, or your baby. I would stick to healthy items, it could only help, and chemicals of any sort, are not really healthy.

The answer above me talks about what has been approved by the FDA, The FDA doesn't approve anything based on any other criteria than what profits them most, something to take in to consideration.

i do no longer think of that's against the regulation for a pregnant female to smoke precisely. that's in basic terms a terrible thought. If a woman takes drugs or alcohol throughout being pregnant, they could in all likelihood in basic terms manage it after the toddler exchange into born whilst they detected the sick impacts. i do no longer see a conflict in those ameliorations. Abortion is criminal with the aid of fact the government can no longer administration a woman's physique. the lady could in basic terms be in concern if she carried the toddler to term and it exchange into somebody at that factor. i think of the regulation is predicated on the fundamental thought that a fetus can not help that's very own existence devoid of the mummy, as a result that's no longer somebody. to no longer point out in case you have been to make abortion unlawful. Then birth control must be in risk of being eradicated. a controversy that the beginning administration exchange into removing a existence must be made (the beginning administration pill working example restricts implantation so it must be deemed an abortion). that's why i think of abortion ought to stay criminal, a minimum of as much as a undeniable degree of being pregnant. birth control is a some distance cry from an abortion. additionally, there are some toddlers that are stumbled directly to have their brains exterior of their cranium throughout the being pregnant. Do you somewhat desire to ask a mom to hold a toddler which will die at beginning and in all likelihood go through greater? i'm no longer asserting that's the superb decision for each guy or woman. yet go away that decision to the persons and their docs. countless the circumstances of a deformed fetus does no longer enable for any style of existence. i'm not sure forcing a mom to hold a toddler, conflict with the aid of a irritating beginning and make her watch her toddler die besides is properly worth status on a ethical severe floor. to no longer point out rape and incest.

First cigarettes, then alcohol, now Splenda.

Keep it up, girls, and it won't be long before pregnant women are involuntarily committed to a hospital to carefully monitor everything that goes in or out of their systems until the child is born.

Worse yet, how about every mother of a child born with anything less than normal about him charged with child endangerment by the state?

Don't roll your eyes like that; it really COULD happen.

You should definitely not have aspartame, but my recommendation would be to stay away from any fake sweetners until after the baby is born.
