America is the name of our continent, and anyone that is born in that continent is an American. America has many countries and anyone born in any of those countries is an American. If you were born in Mexicon, you are an american, if you were born in Venezuela, you are an American, if you were born in Brazil, you are an American. America is one, yes one continent and there is no such thing as the americas. Europe is one continent and there is no such thing as the europes, Asia is one continent and there is no such thing as the Asias, Africa is one conitnet and there is no such thing as the Africas.

You are incorrect. Brazil is on the South American continent; Mexico is in the North American continent, and Panama is a part of the Central American Isthmus. There are two continents, and one bit in between that connects them. This is a fact, based on the definition of what a CONTINENT is.

You make too much of a name. I am a US citizen. I also happen to be an American. I was born here, and ascribe to the philosophy of our forefathers. However, my supervisor at work is also an American. She was born in India, and has lived in this country for only 17 years, but she also is a US citizen, and also ascribes to many, if not all, of the philosphies of the US forefathers.

Based on what you are saying, America is not a location encompassing the North, South and Central Americas, but a philosophical concept based on the writings of Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, James Madison and some few other worthies some 230 years ago. If you cannot ascribe to them, you don't belong here.

Last time I checked you were a Mexican if you were born in Mexico, a Venezuelan if you were born in Venezuela, and a Brazilian if you were born in Brazil.
America is the continent as a whole (North America, Central America & South America).
You are not citizen of a continent , you are a citizen of a country (or countries).

Dear grinningleaf: You just placed your finger in the problem the question aims at solving. "America-as-a-concept." This is why we Americans do not want to see you guys hijacking our name making it subservient to your imperalistic and anti-democratic agendas. You guys are, of course Americans, but most of all USans. Like it or not, Patricio from Chile is just as American, Roxana from Brazil, is just as American, Diana from Venezuela is just as American, and your much hated Pancho from Mexico also just as American as you are.
